I received The God Contest compliments of The Good Book Company in exchange for my honest review.
The God Contest board book is a condensed version of the eponymous picture book. This version is designed to help young readers learn the truth of God's word early on.This book retells the account of 1 Kings 18:20-40, in which the prophet Elijah challenged Baal's prophets to determine who the one true God is. The book concludes by telling little ones that "Jesus is the real God!"
This is a simple, truth filled resource that is great for introducing toddlers to the Bible. It is a part of the Tales That Tell the Truth series and we can't wait to read forthcoming titles!
Finally is this board book with the dynamic duo of Laferton and Echeverri, based on the award winning storybook with the same name. I haven’t read the storybook version of this one but I assume that it’s more lengthy (and more art) in content. I think this is one of the example that I can give that has the same approach with the second book in this review. Although, Jesus Moments: David laid it out clear and straight forward, this new book from Laferton and Echeverri has it’s own thing to in pointing Elijah to Jesus Christ, that is enjoyable and understandable for the target audience. Laferton knows the language of toddlers and the choice of words will stick in either reading to your little ones or they’re the ones who are reading the book. Short but impactful. As for the illustration, Echeverri did what she do best: give kids something that will make their imagination run wild. Like Laferton, she works is limited because of the format of the book. Nevertheless, her illustrations on this book is boundless, specially the one when the God of the Bible proves He is the real God. Of course the essential part of this book is leading kids to Christ, that he is the real God. That transition is a good one. Finishing off the book, a simple interactive thing will help kids see the important lesson of the book.

The God Contest Storybook is a favorite in our home and so I was excited to see The Good Book Company release a board book for little ones!
With simple sentences and engaging illustrations, I believe this is a good resource for teaching young children that there is only one God who answers our prayers and is sovereign over all.
And though I appreciate the connection at the end about Jesus being God, I do feel it was a bit rushed and oversimplified and would have liked for the gospel connection to be explained a bit further.
Overall, my children enjoyed it and I think this would make a nice addition to any preschooler’s library.

This was a simple read. My 1 year old liked flipping through the pages. He would sit and just flip through it a few times. The illustration is captivating. My 6 yr old kept yelling fire whenever we flipped to the fire page. It was fun To see how it drew his attention. This book didn’t have a lot of words so it was an easy read. My son was fascinated by the story. I like books that draws their attention to the Bible and the passages of scripture that helps them learn more about who God is.
Thank you Good Book Company for a Complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
A small board book just right for toddlers and young children's hands. This Bible story was a favorite of my children when they were young. I'm delighted to see it in a children's book so they can learn how the prophet Elijah stood up to the priests of Baal let God demonstrate His power and Supreme Being.
The fire from God to light the altar really gets the attention of story listeners and they learn how God won the "contest" against the other people's god, Baal.
I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine, alone and are freely given.
This book is such a simplistic way of describing the story of Elijah and the power of God. I love the connection to Jesus and the connection of "God is the real God" to "Jesus is the real God".
Yesterday my son asked me to read this book roughly 17 times. He is 1.5 years old and really likes the "FIRE" page. This book is for ages 3-6, but I still like that he enjoys reading it and am excited for him to understand more fully when he's older.
I absolutely love the original version of this book, so I was excited to take a look at the board book version. I think it's a perfect adaptation if the big book for the toddler crowd (the intended audience). It's very much an abridged version, showing that the whole point of Elijah on mount Carmel was to show who the real God is, and later, Jesus would show that he was the true God incarnate through his life death and resurrection. Those are the key points of the story, and this board book hits all those. They are the exact points I hit with my 2 year old when abridging the original story to read with him (the original is pretty long for a short attention span). This board book version is the perfect size for a toddler, and would work fantastic in a 2 year-old Sunday school setting. I also love that the board book is so sturdy and durable. It communicates to littles that this story is for them too. And let's them engage with it as their fine motor skills are still being fine tuned, without destroying the book.
This board book was okay, but I was wanting more. It is very simple and geared toward little ones. My son wasn't huge on this one and I would have loved a little more about Elijah, but I appreciated that it shows very young children that Jesus is God and very briefly introduces children to the story of Elijah which is not a typical story in children storybook bibles. I would have liked more about Elijah though and it was missing a lot from the Bible story. The illustrations are bright and fun. This was just not our personal favorite and it would have been great to see more of a gospel presentation in the book as well along with showing kids how the story of Elijah connects to Christ. Definitely felt like it was missing a lot.
The God Contest tells the story of Elijah on Mount Carmel, how God showed everyone he was real by answering Elijah's prayer. I love how it connects the story to the gospel and how God also showed us he is real by sending his son, Jesus to earth. God has proved who he really is and this simple book can help you teach your toddler those truths early on. This board book is very engaging with simple text and fun illustrations! My 2 year old loves it!
This would be a great gift idea and would fit perfectly in a toddlers Easter basket!
