If someone were to read my texts...

It's been headline news for weeks now. Pundits and politicians have been slugging it out but the questions remain largely unanswered. Most of us will have to continue to live in comparative ignorance about whether elements of our text messages have been scooped up by those tasked with defending national security - or not.

It's the sort of issue that can play on your mind a smidge. And as I was stirring my noodles last night, I was toying with a number of issues that the debate raises. I pondered the issue of personal liberty. I mused about defence. And then I got more personal: I caught my breath... What would people actually see if they did read my texts?!

Oh, fear not, there are no sensitive secrets leaking from my HTC. I know nothing of international interest! But really, what impression would people get if they read my quick communications? Most crucially, would they come to the conclusion that I am a follower of Christ, indwelt by his Spirit, eager to love my family, my brothers and sisters in Christ, my neighbours and my enemies too ... ?

I quickly grabbed my phone.

  • 2 messages sorting out my birthday celebrations (today, if you'd like to know!)
  • 1 checking up on a struggling friend
  • 2 messages discussing various health issues with neighbours (won't it be great to be in a sickness-free new creation?!)
  • 1 organising a dinner
  • 1 setting out a draft agenda for a meeting
  • 1 on the oh so exciting issue of carpet cleaning (such a glamourous life I lead)
  • 1 telling a local pastor that I would be willing to help with his latest exciting gospel project and...
  • 1 lonely text telling a sister that I will be praying for her in the coming difficult days.

It occurs to me that, while political debates on liberty and security are worth some level of engagement, as Christians, we probably should be far more concerned about the God who can read our texts than any government who might ... So, go on, look at yours. It's worth checking: Are you honouring God with your mobile this week?

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:17)
