Love thy [Muslim] neighbour

Tim Thornborough | 6 Jun 2017

Our hearts go out to the victims and families of those who have been caught up in the recent terror attacks, but let’s also spare a thought for another group that is profoundly influenced by these atrocities.

Muslims.

The vast majority of Muslims living in the west are peace-loving, democratically-minded, socially-responsible people who, like everyone else, look with horror on the acts of those who share their faith.

But in the aftermath of these atrocities, they are subject to a whole range of conflicting emotions and struggles. Some may face open and active racially motivated attacks, like the many that are documented on YouTube. But for many more, they must bear with a culture of suspicion and cold hostility, and a media narrative where politicians speak openly about restricting immigration, or even deporting Muslims. It makes everyday life anxious and uncomfortable.

A time like this is a real opportunity to show how genuine Christians can be different from the wider culture.

In the last few months I have got to know a Muslim neighbour who has recently arrived from Egypt. The family dresses in a traditional Middle Eastern way. His wife has struggled with the language and with fitting in at the local school. Apart from her extended family, I suspect she feels quite isolated and alone. I know that they will feel even more isolated in the aftermath of Manchester and London.

What a great opportunity to show understanding and welcome. A knock on the door to ask: “How are you doing?” An assurance of our understanding of their situation. An offer to help them if they experience any discrimination. A time like this is a real opportunity to show how genuine Christians can be different from the wider culture by building bridges of peace and understanding, across which the gospel might one day travel.
