Frantic Friday?

Nothing unmasks our true spiritual condition quite like our attitude towards money. We may think we’re not materialistic, but our response to wealth reveals our hearts. At this time of year, when lots of us are feeling the pinch after Christmas, it’s great to be reminded of Jesus’ words:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

We have to place our riches somewhere. Ultimately, there are only two choices.

  • Why shouldn’t we store up treasure on earth (v 19)?
  • Where should we lay up our wealth instead (v 20)?
  • Why is where we bank our riches so critical (v 21)?
  • Why should Jesus’ disciples feel unafraid to give generously (seev 32)?
  • How is this way of life different to simply “being careful with money”, or finding good deals when we buy things?
  • But how exactly do we go about storing up treasures in heaven?! It’s worth taking a look at Jesus’ teaching on money and worry from Luke 12:32-34:

32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  • Do you truly believe verse 32?
  • How does this show itself in your life?
  • How are you storing up treasures in heaven (v 33)?
