Description

It's the stuff of legends.

An unknown, unlikely-looking kid defiantly takes on the ultimate enemy weapon - an enormous, unconquered super-warrior. He sets out unprotected and alone, yet astonishingly, he slaughters the evil giant - the enemy is routed and David wins a complete victory for his people.

It's easy to see why the story of David and Goliath is still so popular. We love David the hero, the shepherd boy who became king of Israel, chosen by God as a man 'after His own heart'. But what about David the despised 'worm', the hot-tempered bully, the weak father, the lustful playboy and the coldly-calculating murderer? Did God really know what He was doing when He chose David?

This Good Book Guide on the life of David reveals the secret of David’s success and the reasons for his many failures. But it also uncovers the greater story of a better hero. In just six sessions, you will learn how this weak Israelite king points us to the ultimate king, Jesus — despised like the ‘worm’ of David’s psalm, yet finally winning the ultimate victory for His people over sin and death.

Other information

The Good Book Guides have been developed to ensure that each session not only seeks to uncover the meaning of the passage and see how it fits into the big picture of the Bible, but also leads people to apply what they have learnt to their lives. Flexible and practical, the Good Book Guides are ideal for small groups, or individual study.

"The format is very user-friendly and the content is rich and accessible."
- Justin Taylor, Gospel Coalition blogger and Vice-President of Editorial, Crossway

"God-centered, application-oriented, and driven by the text throughout, this resource is a gift to God’s church."
- Matt Smethurst, Gospel Coalition reviewer and Master of Divinity student at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Here at Covenant Life Church, we have greatly benefitted from the small group resources from The Good Book Company. Many small groups in our family life ministry have used "Colossians: Confident Christianity" in their study of scripture. Additionally, our youth ministry has used "Romans 1-5: God and You" in their small groups. Both resources were very easy to use, helped the reader engage directly with the scriptures, and had a wonderful pastoral emphasis demonstrated in all the questions.
- Dave Brewer, Youth Pastor at Covenant Life Church, Maryland

“Well worth reading”

An exceptionally strong insight into the nature of David. He wore his heart on his sleeve and so often we can find echoes of our own feelings in his psalms. It is reassuring to know God loved David's honesty, even when he was angry with God. This book helps explore David, and is well worth a read.

“A helpful guide to the life of King David”

Our home group are about two-thirds of the way through this Study Guide and have found it helpful in learning more of King David. We were a little disappointed that nothing of his life and relationship with Saul and his family was included between the triumph over Goliath and the promises made in 2 Samuel 7.

“Good Resource”

Bought this study guide for a small Bible Studies Group and it works very well. Taking a key event in King David's life and then relating it to Christ with a New Testament reading. We have had very thoughtful and stimulating discussions during our meetings by then adapting it to life today. A very good resource and clearly set out with helpful notes at the back for the course leader.

“Excellent for one-to-one Bible studies”

Have been working through this six-study guide on the life of David over the past few weeks with a friend and would recommend it. The questions and 'explore more' sections are well thought-out, studies can be covered in about an hour, there's a good mix of comprehension and application questions to get you thinking.

“Very good material”

Helpful for group bible study. Well balanced between instruction and challenge

“Challenging and enlightening”

We did these notes with a small group of Christians, some of whom are pretty new to bible study, and some old hands. We had some very good discussions, and were encouraged that in spite of David's sin, God still used him, and God's purposes were fulfilled.

“Usefull tool”

This material is proving popular with the members of the Study Group. It is particularly appreciated that it connects the text and the themes with real exeperiences in both individual and corporate life today.

“Valuable for a closer study of the text.”

We have been using these studies in our house group. We appreciate the questions being closely related to the text. It is also helpful for those who perhaps are less familiar with the Old Testament.
